Powered by Portal is a new platform that provides services to research institutions for design, construction, launch, and management of start-up labs along with programming activities to promote a community of innovation. This platform addresses a growing need to translate ideas into commercial outcomes at research institutions such as universities, national labs, and medical systems that have high caliber faculty and researchers who are developing transformative technologies.

Anchor project: UChicago Incubator at Hyde Park Labs

Our inaugural project is a strategic partnership with the University of Chicago. We are leading the launch of the University of Chicago Science Incubator at Hyde Park Labs, designed to accelerate the commercialization of innovative technologies originating from the university. This 22,000 square foot mixed use laboratory and office space will become home to life sciences, quantum, clean energy, and data science startups. Portal Innovations will manage and operate the incubator and implement targeted programming to educate and engage university innovators, while leveraging our extensive national network. How does Powered by Portal work?

Powered by Portal delivers turnkey laboratory space, that includes design and construction oversight, management services and programming, to create the optimal research environment for startups to thrive. Specifics include:

  • Advisory and design construction – Portal provides comprehensive project management services to support the launch of science incubators, including selection of project design team and contractor, development of the incubator design, acquisition of equipment, and construction oversight.
  • Management of startup labs – Portal delivers essential lab operation services for science incubators, including equipment management, environment, health & and safety (EHS) management, vendor relations, waste management, safety checks, equipment training & and member management, ensuring the day-to-day operations for scientists are smooth and efficient.
  • Programming – Portal has developed a strategy to ensure early-stage science companies secure their next round of funding and reach IND milestones. We offer support through various initiatives such as CEO roundtables, fundraising and milestone boot camps, regulatory pathway workshops, investor days, and mentorship programs.
